Musicality in Voiceover
There is a rhythm to every piece of voiceover copy, whether it's a car commercial, narration or video game. I like to find the musicality as well as feel it. If I'm feeling stuck with a particular audition, I sing and hum the words and then I say the copy again. It takes me to a different sound and place in my imagination which leads me to a different take. I can sing a piece of copy to find the musicality and feel where the sound is coming from in my chest.
When you're looking at an audition, put the adult aside and let the child in you enter and play around with the script. Do a wild take; use props in the booth and give yourself permission to be goofy. Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse, then say the words as if for the first time. And remember, you've got one role to play at a time. When you're voicing the audition, be the actor. and keep the director out of your head. If you make a mistake, just do it again. Be kind to yourself. You can always edit later,
Allow yourself to experiment with copy by singing in the booth. Come on! It's just you and the mic!
